Corpus Christi, TX, USA – Continuing its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) leadership, the Port of Corpus Christi has completed its third consecutive year operating on 100 percent renewable energy, the first Port Authority to do so in the world.
The Port of Corpus Christi began charting its new stewardship course in 2016 with an adoption of a new environmental policy, cementing its leadership by committing to 100 percent renewable energy by 2018, a goal it achieved ahead of schedule. By 2020 the Port of Corpus Christi claimed nearly 10 million kWh’s of green energy credits, making it the first port in the region to do so.
“Our ongoing commitment to being an environmental leader in all we do is a centerpiece of our value system at the Port of Corpus Christi,” said Sean Strawbridge, Chief Executive Officer for the Port of Corpus Christi. “When the Port Authority – with full support of the Port Commission – made the commitment to 100 percent renewable energy as a decarbonization strategy, it demonstrated our belief that economic prosperity can be achieved safely and responsibly. We welcome other seaports who have recently followed our example.
”The Port holds itself and its customers to high standards in environmental stewardship to ensure responsible and sustainable growth by design. The Port has recycled more than 1 million pounds of materials since 2005, is proactive with air monitoring, and has recently used a federal grant to purchase a solar-powered floating skimmer to keep trash from flowing in to Corpus Christi Bay during periods of heavy rainfall.
“The example that the Port of Corpus Christi has set with its efforts to rely on 100 percent renewable energy is something that has inspired other ports to follow suit,” said Charles W. Zahn, Port of Corpus Christi Commission Chairman.“Being the first port in the state of Texas to take this step three years ago put us on a path that we are committed to continuing in the years ahead not just for ourselves, but for generations of Texans who will enjoy our natural amenities for decades to come.”
