Port of Aveiro begins maintenance dredging at three sites

Port of Aveiro starts maintenance dredging Port of Aveiro

Posted on May 26, 2025

Portugal’s Port of Aveiro has begun a series of maintenance dredging operations in the three strategic port areas of Canelete, the Coastal Fishing Port and the Largo Fishing Port.

The project represents a global investment of 2.13 million euros ($2.42 million) and aims to improve safety, navigability and operational conditions for vessels operating in these areas.

Dredging work in Canelete began last week. This area is mainly used by government vessels, and for safety reasons, navigation in the area has been banned since May 19. This ban will be extended until June 30, as determined by the Maritime Authority.

At the Largo Fishing Port, dredging work will start at the beginning of June, with the aim of reestablishing seabed levels near the jetties, which are currently silted up, compromising navigability in certain tidal conditions.

This project is being carried out by MMAS Dragagens and represents an investment of around 425,000 euros.

At the Coastal Fishing Port, maintenance dredging work also began last week, covering the small-scale fishing shelter and the Jardim Oudinot Recreational Dock.

During the intervention at the small-scale fishing shelter port, it will be necessary to temporarily relocate vessels moored at the pontoons. This process is being coordinated by the Port Authority and the contractor responsible, Rohde Nielsen, in collaboration with vessel owners, APARA and the Boca da Barra Nautical Club.
