Ovation of the Seas will be the biggest cruise ship to ever visit New Zealand. The dredging of Shakespeare Bay, near Picton, is needed to make Marlborough a competitive destination for larger cruise ships, the port chief executive says. In late March, Port Marlborough applied for resource consent to remove nearly 20,000 tonnes of seabed material next to Waimahara Wharf at Shakespeare Bay. No submissions were made during the notification period, and a Marlborough District Council spokesman said a decision on the consent was expected within a week. Port Marlborough chief executive Ian McNabb said if the consent was approved dredging could start within the next two months and would be finished in time for the 2016/17 cruise season.
