Port Houston Makes Progress on Project to Widen, Deepen Bayport Channel

Port Houston has completed its portion of a dredging project to deepen and widen the Bayport Channel, according to the authority’s blog post Wednesday.

The U.S. Army Corps and other organizations have some work to finalize before ships with 45-foot drafts can use the channel, which is being deepened by 5 feet to match the 45-foot depth of the Houston Ship Channel. It is also being widened by 50 to 100 feet.

The project will ultimately allow larger ships to call on the Bayport Container Terminal.

“The federal processes for approval, budgeting and construction by the Corps of Engineers to accomplish this project would have taken about 13 years start to finish,” project manager David Casebeer said in the blog post. “With our efforts and funding, we accomplished the same goal in a little over six years.”

The total cost for permitting, design and construction was about $85 million, including dredging the Barbours Cut channel that was completed in 2015.
