Close to 700 transient vessels are expected to berth at the Port Denarau Marina which

will make it a record number for the niche port.

This marina remains an integral part of the Fijian tourism infrastructure, providing access and being a link to all the resorts in the Yasawas and Mamanucas.

Tour operators such as cruises, fishing and other marine based businesses, yachting and the constantly growing international cruise ship visits since 1999 are included in the expected visits.

Port Denarau Marine Limited general manager Cynthia Rasch said: “We are hopeful that 2018 would be another record year for us and expect total transient vessel numbers to be nearing 700.

“We can confirm 554 visiting yachts and 65 super yachts in Fiji waters in 2017.

“We have commenced with our survey and expect to have our yachting survey stats available by mid January.”

This week, there are currently 50 visiting yachts in the marina with three super yachts at berth.

Plans for 2018

With Port Denarau Marina retaining their title as International Marina of the Year for four consecutive years, a much anticipated extension to its super yacht jetty is an added plus.

“We are seeing more new vessels visiting our shores and our marina,” Ms Rasch said.

“Now as a Port of Entry, we expect the number of vessels clearing in and out of our Marina to increase as well.

“We were full during the height of our season in 2017 and expect the same trend for 2018.”

According to Ms Rasch, the Marina has been unable to utilise their five by 70 metres berths to its full capacity.

“This has been due to delayed approval for dredging in the marina, we are currently awaiting ministerial approvals and will see our capacity increase once approval is given and dredging is completed.

“We are also considering further shore based extensions in 2018/ 2019,” she said.

Ms Rasch confirmed that there is big water sporting events shaping for this year as well.

“There are a few sporting events scheduled for later in 2018, details will be released once all discussions are finalised,” she said.

The annual New Zealand trade Marine day will go ahead as scheduled this year with date to be confirmed later.
