VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Volusia County coast took a beating over the weekend with the rough surf and high tides destroying a brand new section of the Ponce Inlet jetty walkway.
The walkway is well known for many reasons, one of which is the ability to see a pair of dolphins every now and again. It’s also known for its long walkway, allowing beachgoers the opportunity to extend beyond the shore and take in the beach’s beauty from a new location.
Corinne Morton, one of many who went to see the new walkway damaged yet again, said it just breaks her heart.
“It really does break our hearts,” Morton said. “It’s so beautiful and people like to enjoy it.”
Last year, Hurricane Milton severely damaged the walkway. Winds of up to 180 mph damaged the pier, leaving it looking like a box of crushed matchbook sticks.
Junior Dickson says the pier is his favorite spot in Florida to fish.
“Hopefully they fix it,” Dickson said.
The wooden part of the walkway that will require the most attention was actually a temporary fix. A permanent, more stable solution is in the works.
Crews visited the walkway to survey the damage and get a plan to fix it in the works.
In the meantime, the pier will have to be admired from afar.
