“Spoils” has become a dirty word in shore towns looking to clear their waterways. The material is often seen as contaminated.
“Well, that’s wrong,” said Stewart Farrell, director and founder of Stockton University’s Coastal Research Center. “In New Jersey, dredging has gone on with DEP review for 40 years.”
Farrell said of the four coastal counties in the state, not one has been found to have dredge materials that are unacceptable for upland disposal.
