PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A beach nourishment project has started at Upham Beach in Pinellas County.
- Upham Beach getting renourished
- Project to last a couple of weeks
- Renourishment to help protect residents, wildlife
The county has worked on Upham Beach for the last couple of years with a stabilization project that started in 2017. Now the renourishment portion is beginning.
Several hundred thousand pounds of sand will be dragged from Blind Pass and placed from north to south.
County officials say beach nourishment projects like this are important because they not only provide better storm protection for residents but they also create habitats for birds and turtles.
Both projects are expected to cost $3.5 million, with money coming from the federal government as well as the state and Pinellas County.
The project is expected to last a couple of weeks. Beach goers will see fenced in areas where crews are working.
