The city’s historic bridge will close through mid October for a river dredging project that is expected to bring more tourism to the city.
PETALUMA, CA — Petaluma’s historic D Street Bridge closed to all traffic at noon Sunday and will remain shut until Oct. 13. The bridge is closed for an ongoing a river dredging project, the city announced.
The project is expected to open up the basin and bring more tourism to Petaluma.
The closure applies to all vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. All traffic will be diverted to the river crossing at Washington Street.
Trucks are instructed to take a detour through Petaluma Boulevard South through Highway 101 to cross the river while avoiding downtown.
Golden Gate and Petaluma Transit will also be rerouted to avoid the D Street Bridge. A detour map can be found here and more details on transit routes can be found on the city’s website.
The dredging project is scheduled for completion in mid-October.
“Once complete, boats will be able to navigate up to the turning basin, bringing tourism and business to Petaluma,” the city said in a statement.
The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is sponsoring the dredging project, which was last done in 2003. Work will be done continuously to ensure completion by mid-October, officials said.
