KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with the City of Parkville, is pleased to announce the completion of the Parkville Bottoms Wetland Restoration Project. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Sept.23 at the Parkville Bottoms to celebrate this significant achievement.
This ambitious project has successfully restored over 40 acres of vital aquatic, prairie and riparian habitat within the Missouri River floodplain. The restoration will substantially benefit fish and wildlife populations, while significantly enhancing recreational opportunities for the community.
Initiated in 2014 with a planning study, the $5 million project faced initial challenges during construction, which concluded in 2022. The unanticipated presence of porous wetland base soils prevented the wetland from holding water, preventing vegetation establishment.
Leveraging a higher-than-expected land valuation, the Kansas City District secured an additional $1.2 million in federal funding and relined the wetland to ensure the presence of more permanent standing water. To further support the water supply, a windmill was installed. These efforts resulted in the establishment of full wetland pools throughout the year, a dramatic improvement over the previous condition.
All USACE work at the project site was completed on Sept. 16, at which point the project was officially turned over to the City of Parkville for ongoing operation and maintenance.
