Australian state government body Parks Victoria said it will soon begin maintenance dredging at the entrance to the Werribee River in Victoria.
According to the agency, the work is expected to take three to four weeks to complete, depending on weather conditions.
The project will use pumps and pipelines to relocate the sand onto the nearby Werribee South Beach to assist with mitigating coastal erosion. Parks Victoria noted that the relocated sand may initially appear dark and have an odour due to organic material, which is natural and fades with exposure to sun and air.
While the work is underway, the local boat ramps will remain open. The main jetty will also stay mostly open, though temporary access restrictions may apply when equipment is operating nearby. Sections of Werribee South Beach and a shared pathway will be temporarily closed for safety, and a booster pump will reduce available parking in the local car park.
The agency has advised boaters to navigate with caution around dredging equipment and be aware of floating and submerged pipelines. Vessels are instructed to approach slowly and follow navigation markers, passing only on the side marked with two black diamonds.
