Oxelösund Port expands for SEK 700 millions

Posted on February 24, 2025

The Port of Oxelösund has a vision to be the Baltic Sea’s leading port terminal. To meet the needs of the region and the business community in the future, the port needs to grow and modernize. The investment is around SEK 700 million.

For example, the port’s largest customer, SSAB, will in the future replace a large part of its current cargo flow with scrap and other ferrous raw materials. Other customers also see the benefits of the port’s advantageous geographical location and integrated transport and logistics solutions. Overall, this increases the demand and requirements for the port’s services.

The investment includes, among other things, an extended quay, an additional quay crane, dredging of the port basin and modernization of the railway infrastructure and aims to future-proof the port.

– The investment strengthens both our own and the region’s competitiveness, opening up new business and customer collaborations. The Port of Oxelösund has the potential to become one of the Baltic Sea’s most important transport nodes for several industries, says Staffan Thelander, CEO of the Port of Oxelösund.

In addition to the construction of the new quay, the port is investing in the modernization of railway tracks and yard, which will increase capacity and enable sustainable transport with maximum efficiency.

Part of the investment includes dredging the port basin, which will provide capacity for greater draft at the port’s inner quays. In addition, new warehouse space will be created, which will allow for expanded customer collaboration and greater flexibility in logistics solutions.

Oxelösund Port, which is already one of the most accessible ports in the Baltic Sea, is also planning to expand its opening hours and service.

– Through the investments, we enable more fast and environmentally friendly transport and remain part of a value chain that will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the steel industry. We see this as a model for how we can help more companies offer climate-smart and efficient logistics solutions, says Staffan Thelander.

The full development of the port’s infrastructure and facilities is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027.
