The question, according to Ottawa County officials, is whether or not the river should be left as a quiet waterway or “improved” to allow recreational traffic to navigate the entire length of the river from Grand Rapids to Grand Haven.
To answer that question, county officials also must overcome several obstacles — the high price tag expected for dredging the river and the environmental concerns that could be raised from removing potentially contaminated soil from the river bottom.
