The ‘heart’ of Baltica 2 takes shape.
The first high-voltage transformer has now been installed on one of the Polish project’s four offshore substations. In simple terms, these substations will form the beating heart of the offshore wind farm by collecting electricity from the turbines, stepping up the voltage, and transmitting the electricity to shore.
They’re a serious feat of engineering as well. Each topside substation will stand about 45 metres tall once installed at sea and weigh roughly 3,000 tonnes – around the same as 600 elephants.
“Installing the transformer is a defining moment,” explains Ulrik Lange, Managing Director of the Baltica 2 project at Ørsted, continuing: “It’s where construction turns into real energy infrastructure – and where months of precise planning and engineering become visible progress.”
“This achievement reflects the focus, professionalism, and safety-first mindset of everyone involved,” he says, adding: “Every successful lift, every safe operation, moves Baltica 2 closer to delivering renewable energy to millions of Polish homes.”
Work on the offshore substations is progressing according to plan. The first two are already structurally complete. At the same time, the remaining two offshore substations are being coated and prepared for equipment installation, so that the entire Baltica 2 transmission system will be ready for commissioning in 2027.
As Poland’s flagship offshore wind project, Baltica 2 is a key part of our global construction portfolio and our 8.1 GW offshore wind construction programme for 2025 to 2027.
