Did you know that ‘vind’ means ‘wind’ in Danish? So, of course, we built the first offshore wind farm in ‘Wind City’ – Vindeby!
Over its 25-year lifetime, Vindeby generated 243 GWh of renewable power. Fast-forward to today: We’re building Baltica 2 in Poland, coming online next year and set to power approx. 2.5 million households.
How long will it take Baltica 2 to produce what Vindeby did in 25 years? Less than a month.
That’s the power of scale, the power of innovation, and the power of industrialisation built on trust, cooperation, and predictability between governments and industry.
In connection with the Copenhagen Competitiveness Summit at Danish Industry – bringing together European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and 28 of Europe’s leading companies, with our Chairman Lene Skole in attendance – we were pleased to welcome Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Teresa Ribera to our Gentofte office to discuss how Europe can stay competitive in a changing world.
We had an inspiring conversation about the role of offshore wind, Ørsted’s experience and ambition to lead the development of offshore wind in Europe, and what it will take for policymakers and industry to harness this resource effectively for the benefit of European citizens.
… and we couldn’t resist a little wind geekery, so we showed her a piece of history: the original gearbox from a Vindeby wind turbine. Proof that big ideas and great engineering can move mountains (and a lot of megawatts).
