100‑metre steel giants ready for Baltica 2
The first batch of monopile foundations for our Baltica 2 offshore wind project in Poland has rolled off the factory floor. At up to 100 metres long and 7.5–10.5 metres in diameter, they’re an impressive feat of engineering.
Or as our Chief Construction Officer, Patrick Harnett, puts it: “Monopiles are among the most demanding components of offshore projects. We’re talking about structures up to 100 metres long and weighing nearly 2,000 tonnes, with durability measured in decades.”
This week, together with our joint venture partner PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, he visited EEW Group, one of two monopile suppliers for Baltica 2, to see the scale of this vast undertaking first-hand and learn more about the advanced technologies used in monopile production.
“We were very pleased to learn that production of these components is progressing on schedule. As Poland’s flagship offshore wind project, Baltica 2 also remains a key part of Ørsted’s global construction portfolio and our 8.1 GW offshore wind construction programme for 2025 to 2027,” said Patrick Harnett.
Baltica 2 is set to become the largest offshore wind farm in Poland. Developed together with PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, it’s expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2027 and will have a capacity of around 1.5 GW – enough to power about 2.5 million homes in Poland.
