International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) subsidiary Operadura Portuaria Centroamericana (OPC) has entered a deal with the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to expand the first phase of a specialised container and cargo terminal in the port of Puerto Cortes, Honduras.
A new 350m-long berth with a depth of 15.5m, as well as two trestles to be connected to the existing yard, will be built under the deal.
The expanded berth will be also dredged up to 14m deep and equipped with two super post-Panamax quay cranes, increasing the number of OPC cranes in the port to six.
The proposed terminal expansion is expected to help Puerto Cortes improve its presence in the Caribbean region, as is scheduled to be completed by the middle of next year.

The port currently handles 85% of shipments to Honduras, 10% to El Salvador and 5% to Nicaragua.
In 2013, ICTSI secured a 30-year concession to design, finance, build, maintain, operate and explore the specialised container and cargo terminal in Honduras.
Last December, ICTSI subsidiary Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) concluded the construction of a new terminal at Webb Dock in the Port of Melbourne, Australia.
The container terminal features five Neo-Panamax quay cranes, currently owned by ICTSI.
