Omaha District awards contract for phase four development of Lake Zorinsky maintenance corridor

Posted on October 18, 2023

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District Contracting Division recently awarded a contract to Caliburnus Services LLC to create a maintenance corridor along the northern portion of the federal property line at Lake Zorinsky in Omaha between 168th Street and 156th Street.

This is the fourth phase of the development and will implement a 30-foot-wide corridor around the entire perimeter of the property. The work is necessary to comply with USACE policies pertaining to the stewardship of public property.

Some benefits and uses of the corridor include:

  • Visually marking the federal property boundary line.
  • Reducing risk to adjacent property owners.
  • Enabling encroachment detection and resolution of private encroachments.
  • Improving emergency access to remote or heavily forested areas.
  • Decreasing fire intensity immediately along the boundary line.
  • Improving land management stewardship for adjacent homeowners through tree maintenance and mowing.

The contract will be administered by the Missouri River Project Office that manages the operation of Lake Zorinsky. Phase four contract work will begin as early as next week and is expected to be completed by September 2024. Additional subsequent phases are anticipated over the next few years.

Lake Zorinsky is a reservoir located behind Papillion Creek Dam Site 18, which was constructed by USACE to manage risks associated with large flood events while also providing public recreation opportunities. In addition, the federal land surrounding the lake is managed by USACE through a lease agreement with the City of Omaha.
