Donald’s Trump’s administration has further threatened the US offshore wind industry by auditing £11.3bn of green energy grants previously awarded by Joe Biden.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced yesterday that projects which won funding under the former president are financially sound, aligned with US economic interests and consistent with current policies, according to Bloomberg.
The reviews will cover projects for modernising the power grid, making batteries in the US and building other energy technologies such as those in the offshore wind supply chain.
Projects that don’t meet the new standards face having their funding terminated or harshly cut.
Mr Wright said in a statement: “The new policy is essential to identifying and avoiding fraud, waste and abuse.
“With this process, we will ensure we are doing our due diligence, utilising taxpayer dollars to generate the largest possible benefit to the American people and safeguarding our national security.”
Initially, 179 projects will be reviewed, but many more could be audited in the future, including power utilities, biofuel producers and other ventures.
The Energy Department has also threatened to terminate grants where recipients fail “to respond to follow-up questions in a timely manner” or provide “incomplete responses”.
