Official Fired Over Yangtze Dredging

Posted on June 7, 2018

A Central China official was fired and four others were punished for neglecting to protect the Yangtze River.

The sacked official Wu Kejiang was accused of sleeping on the job and forging documents among other derelictions of duty involving a vessel illegally dredging sand from a section of the river in Jinzhou, Hubei Province.

Wu, a deputy at the Gongan county water administration, had been notified of the dredging around midnight on March 5.

The next day, a task force from Jinzhou confirmed that sand had been excavated and the vessel fled despite Wu telling superiors no suspicious boats were in the area.

The team also found Wu had ordered a colleague, Wu Hong (no relation), to forge records relevant to the case.

Wu Kejiang later admitted he did not go to the scene and instead went back to sleep, a local disciplinary commission said.

He was fired from his position. Wu Hong and three other officials involved were also punished, the commission announced on May 17.
