Oceanside takes major step to combat beach erosion with sand replenishment project

“This material otherwise would’ve gone to a landfill or used in a construction site. It’s very suitable for the beach and we need sand,” said Jayme Timberlake.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Oceanside is launching a significant beach protection initiative, with trucks currently dumping approximately 2,000 cubic yards of donated sand onto Tyson Street Beach, just south of the pier, to combat long-term erosion.

“We have less and less natural sand coming to the shoreline, and so as a coastal management tool, we want to grab sand from different sources and consistently place sand on the beach,” said Jayme Timberlake, the Coastal Zone Administrator for the City of Oceanside.

The project, which will continue through the end of the week, marks the first official beach replenishment effort under the city’s permits. The sand being used was donated from the Front Wave Arena construction project, which ran from 2021 through the fall of 2024. It was also donated from the dredging that occurred in the San Elijo Lagoon in Encinitas. The city stored the sand on city property for use in beach erosion protection. The sand underwent significant testing to make sure it’s safe.

“2000 cubic yards of sand doesn’t sound like a lot, but only about 10 yards fit in one truck, and so it’s a lot of truck hauls. But this material otherwise would’ve gone to a landfill or used in a construction site it’s very suitable for the beach and we need sand,” said Timberlake.

The initiative aims to widen the beach area and ensure that Oceanside’s beaches can be used for many years to come. The work will continue through the end of the week, with trucks operating from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

The public beaches will remain open during the replenishment work. However, Timberlake asks that the public be careful with all of the equipment.
