Obama Threatens Veto of Enhanced US Port Funding

An effort to make more government money available for port maintenance dredging and construction projects was rejected by President Barack Obama, who threatened to veto a budget proposal by US Senate lawmakers.

Last week the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a bill that would have set aside USD6 billion for civil works projects carried out by the US Army Corps of Engineers, a 30% increase over the USD4.62 billion proposed by the Obama administration.

However, “the administration believes funding included in the bill for the Army Corps of Engineers beyond the 2017 fiscal year (FY 2017) budget request would not provide a high return on investment to the American taxpayer”, the White House said in a policy letter on 20 April.
