OAK ISLAND, NC — The Oak Island Town Council held a special meeting today to discuss the beach nourishment project.
The project was set to begin this January, but bids from dredging companies came back too high, exceeding the town’s $40 million budget.
During the meeting, the council reviewed options and continued negotiations with the companies. Councilmember Terri Cartner expressed the challenges of the delay: “We’re all disappointed because we wanted it to start this January, but now we have to go through another potential hurricane season without getting the sand on our beach that we need. We have some houses on the west end of our island that are in dire need of sand, so we’re hoping that by next January, the project will be underway.”
The council decided to move forward with a bid that stays under budget, although it will cover less area than initially planned. They remain hopeful that by next year, the project will be fully on track.
