North Toledo Site Prepares for Farm on Dredged Soil

A North Toledo neighborhood fighting to overcome its reputation for poverty and crime could be less than a year away from gaining national attention as the site of Ohio’s most innovative farm.

If all goes as planned, Riverside Park will be growing crops in soil dredged from the Toledo shipping channel next summer, Scudder Mackey, chief of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ office of coastal management, said at Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory.

“We will be moving dirt by the end of October or early November,” Mr. Mackey said last week. “We will be accepting dredged material in 2016.”
