Determined to reposition the National Inland Water Ways Authority (NIWA) to carry out one of its core mandates, its Managing Director, Barrister Boss Mustapha, has mobilized the organisation’s dredger to carry out maintenance dredging on Ajaokuta-Onitsha water ways.

Mr. Mustapha made the declaration during the inauguration of the dredging committee at the NIWA headquarters in Lokoja recently saying it is part of the efforts to provide navigation all the year round on the river Niger. The chief executive officer assured that all NIWA equipment would be handled by its staff as there are capable hands that can handle them without resorting to hiring or contracts.

Mustapha who frowned at the policy of contracting routine works said that NIWA has capable hands that can handle and maintain its equipment who are currently rendered redundant due to craze for contracts. He said that the Dredger is to carry out maintenance dredging on the water ways channels from Ajaokuta to Onitsha so as to ensure smooth navigation of barges and vessels.

Boss Mustapha emphasised that maintenance dredging will, if carried out regularly will keep the Ajaokuta -Onitsha water ways navigable, adding that the dredging maintenance exercise would be extended to other channels from time to time.
