NIWA Budgets N13.4B for Dredging, Travels, Others in 2016

For the year 2016, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is to spend N13.4 Billion on dredging, purchase of equipment, travels, trainings, among others.

Out of the amount, N5 Billion is for the Dredging of River Benue (Lokoja –Makurdi), N4 Billion for the Dredging of Lower River Niger (outstanding paymrnt to contractors 2012, 2013), N1 Billion for Design of River Training work for lower River Niger and N1.9 Billion for purchase of Baro Port Cargo Handling Equipment.

Also within the year, NIWA is to spend N178 Million to construct/rehabilitate its headquarters and area offices.

Breakdown of NIWA’s 2016 budget obtained by www.citybusinessnews.com revealed that the Agency is to spend N297 Million on training, travels and security.

Under this arrangement, N85 Million is earmarked for local travels and tours, N35.5 Million for National and Foreign conferences while N175 Million is for “General security on waterways”.

Meanwhile, the Agency has set aside N30 Million for Public Relations, Newspapers and advertisement.

In a related development, N30 Million is earmarked for sensitization and enlightenment while N12Million is for entertainment.

Besides, www.citybusinessnews.com observed that within the year, NIWA is to spend N74 Million on “Community awareness/publicity for dredging and port projects”.

Also within the year, Staff Welfare, consultancy services, Health, Safety and Environment is to get N50 Million, N29.9Million and N10.5 Million respectively.

Other recurrent expenditure are miscellaneous N10 Million, maintenance of furniture and equipment (N8 Million), Contribution/subventions/remittances (N30 Million), Utility services (N15 Million), Project Monitoring and Evaluation (N24 Million) and Library Accesseries (N14 Million), among others.
