The Village of Newark has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the New York State Canal Corporation as part of the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) Initiative’s thirteenth round.
This funding is a portion of over $950,000 in grants allocated to eight upstate New York municipalities. These grants, evaluated and scored by Regional Councils, aim to support projects that align with regional goals and strategies. The REDC Initiative, since its inception, has focused on revitalizing communities and businesses across the state through strategic economic development projects.
The grant to Newark will fund the design and installation of a new ADA-accessible kayak launch at the Port of Newark. This investment is part of a broader initiative to enhance recreational and tourism activities along the New York Canal System. The grants are intended to improve the functionality and appearance of areas surrounding the Canal and Canalway Trails, fostering an inclusive environment for residents and visitors alike.
Governor Hochul emphasized the New York Canal System’s dual role as an economic driver and recreational asset, reinforcing the state’s commitment to the prosperity of canal-side communities. Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado highlighted the state’s dedication to creating an inclusive waterway and trail system. The New York State Canal Corporation Director, Brian U. Stratton, applauded Governor Hochul’s commitment and envisioned these grants ensuring a vibrant and accessible canal corridor for future generations. Mayor Jonathan Taylor of Newark expressed gratitude for the grant, noting its alignment with the village’s vision to make the T. Spencer Knight Park a prime destination. Mark Peake, Economic Development Facilitator, also recognized the grant’s potential to boost tourism and enhance visitors’ experiences along the Erie Canal and Empire State Trail.
