Dare County released a new video on the status of the Hatteras dredging project on May 17. The video can be seen above and can also be found online and on the Dare County Website.
Per the video, the planned dredging within the connecting channel of Hatteras Inlet is underway. The Army Corps of Engineers dredge, The Merritt, is back in the inlet working on the connecting channel, and dredging will continue for 21 days, or until June 15th – whichever comes first.
The dredging will attempt to clear up the shoaling in the connecting channel located between the Ocracoke South Ferry Terminal and the Inlet Gorge, so that vessels can safely access the ocean.
The agreement which is funded by the state of North Carolina and Dare County allows the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge up to four times a year in the inlet’s non-federal waters, but the Corps can only work on the project if it is already working on a nearby federally authorized channel.
