New mega-yacht repair center coming to Treasure Coast with jobs

Posted on April 18, 2019

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — St. Lucie County Commissioners voted 5-0 Tuesday morning to approve a 30-year contract with Derecktor Shipyards of Dania Beach to lease land from the county and operate a mega-yacht repair center and refit facility at the Port of Fort Pierce.

Paul Derecktor, president of Derecktor Shipyards, was pleased with the unanimous decision.

“This is a phenomenal opportunity. This is like the Superbowl to us,” Derecktor said.

The vote was months in the making.

County Commissioner Frannie Hutchinson said this is a moment the community has come together.

“This is a moment that this county can see a dream come true,” Hutchinson said.

County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky said the move is going to change the face of the county.

“This is going to change these neighborhoods that have struggled,” Dzadovsky said. “We want to go from this opportunity to prosperity and that will happen with the jobs that will come from here.”

County officials said the 12.5-acre mega-yacht repair center will bring worldwide visibility to the area.

The facility is expected to create about 900 skilled-trades jobs within three to five years.
