The Port of New Bedford has applied to the US Department of Transportation for a $15m grant to expand facilities for a variety of industries, including offshore wind.
The money is being sought from the DoT’s Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (Tiger) program.
The port would use the funds to build 244 metres of additional bulkhead in the North Terminal and complete dredging.
Port of Bedford mayor John Mitchell said: “The purpose of this project is to promote growth in the Port of New Bedford across multiple industries: fishing, offshore wind, cargo and island freight.”
The port is also applying to the 2017 Infrastructure For Rebuilding America grant program for the same purpose.
Earlier this month, Deepwater Wind said it would use New Bedford as a hub for its 144MW Revolution offshore wind farm, if the project is given the go-ahead by state regulators.
