NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE)– The New Bedford Port Authority announced the completion of Phase V of the New Bedford Harbor Dredging Project on Monday morning.

The project as a whole has been ongoing since 2019.

In Phase V, the port authority said, approximately 380,000 cubic yards of sediment were removed from the water.

Elected officials celebrated the completion of the phase, saying that the project would result in an economic boost.

“The recently completed ‘Phase V’ dredging project has been years in the making, and it will open up opportunities for fishing businesses to grow and create new jobs,” New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell said. “I am grateful for the team at the New Bedford Port Authority for their skillful planning and oversight of the project, and for Governors Baker and Healey for funding it.”

The total project cost of the phase, according to the port authority, was $35.7 million.
