Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m. Update: NCDOT has announced that NC 12 between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe has been closed again due to unsafe conditions brought on by ocean overwash. Crews are working to repair the dune so that road can be re-opened safely. That stretch of NC 12 had just re-opened on Monday, Oct. 13.
Flooding threat for OBX remains through Wednesday
The latest update issued by the National Weather Service at Newport/Morehead City on the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 14 indicates a continuing flood threat to the Outer Banks through Wednesday, Oct. 15.
- Moderate flooding possible (2 to 4 feet of inundation) with this afternoon’s high tide (~1 pm) across oceanside OBX Dare north of Cape Hatteras. Similar conditions possible across Hatteras Island for tomorrow afternoon’s high tide.
- Significant impacts expected along NC 12 north of Cape Hatteras around high tide when ocean overwash and flooding will likely make portions of the highway inaccessible, with damage to adjacent structures possible.
- Extended period of minor soundside flooding of up to 1 to 2 feet of inundation from Avon south to Ocracoke Village through Wednesday.
At the same time, debris cleanup efforts following the collapse of nine homes in Buxton and Rodanthe from Sept. 30-Oct. 3 are continuing on some level or about to resume.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) staff, which had paused debris cleanup efforts due to the Nor’easter, is now using roving patrols of the beach to periodically clean up smaller debris south of Buxton and in the vicinity of the recent Rodanthe house collapse. The CHNS says these patrols will increase when ocean conditions improve in the coming days.
Dare County reports that that county Public Works staff are in Buxton today assessing the situation. The county’s debris removal contractor will return to Buxton on Wednesday, to complete remaining work.
