Michael Johnson, president and CEO of the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA), will step down from his role Oct. 11.

NSSGA made the announcement in a written statement, adding that Michele Stanley, the association’s executive vice president and chief advocacy officer, will serve as interim CEO. NSSGA will pursue a permanent president and CEO through a search process.

Johnson will serve NSSGA in his current capacity into Oct. 11.

“Under Mike’s leadership, NSSGA is in the best position it’s ever been in to represent and advocate for our members,” says Jim Nickolas, executive vice president and CFO at Martin Marietta, who currently serves NSSGA as board chair. “During his tenure, the association successfully implemented four successive Rocks Build America strategic plans, and our membership has grown to now exceed 500 member companies within the aggregates and industrial sand industry. The events, including the AGG1 show, continued to set new records for participation and exhibit sales, reflecting the large interest and growth of our industry.”

Johnson joined NSSGA in 2013 following a seven-year stint serving the National Beer Wholesalers Association as executive vice president and chief advocacy officer. In his career, Johnson also served the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America and the National Association of Home Builders.

“Mike has assembled a team of professionals that will carry on the great work to deliver value to our member companies,” Nickolas adds. “The reputation and influence that NSSGA enjoys today is a testament to the work Mike and his team have done.”

Just last week, Johnson touted the formation of the Congressional Aggregates Caucus as “a historical event for our industry.”

“The aggregates industry provides the essential materials to build our nation’s infrastructure and connect our communities,” Johnson says. “With Congress set to consider critical legislation for our industry, from tax reform to surface transportation reauthorization, the formation of this caucus comes at an opportune time.”

During his time at NSSGA, Johnson was a regular participant at the Pit & Quarry Roundtable & Conference, offering insights about legislative and regulatory affairs pertaining to the industry.
