Port of San Diego Harbor Police Department boats combat a fire onboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) at Naval Base San Diego, July 12. On the morning of July 12, a fire was called away aboard the ship while it was moored pier side at Naval Base San Diego. Local, base, and shipboard firefighters responded to the fire. USS Bonhomme Richard is going through a maintenance availability, which began in 2018.

General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Co.(NASSCO), San Diego, Calif., has been awarded $10,000,000 for emergency firefighting support, dewatering, safety and initial clean-up efforts on the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6), which was damaged during the fire aboard it that broke out July 12. All known fires aboard the vessel were not extinguished until July 16.

The fire broke out during a phased maintenance availability of the ship and this latest award to NASSCO is a modification of its September 2018 contract for that availability
