MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — Myrtle Beach City Council proposed an amendment Tuesday to Senate bill 869, or the Beach Preservation Trust Act, which would provide state funding to municipal and local governments for beach renourishment projects.
The funds would go toward the restoration of eroded public beaches and the enhancement of public beach access, according to Myrtle Beach City Council.
Officials added that it would also fund the restoration of beaches and sand dunes on an emergency basis after significant storm damage.
According to Myrtle Beach officials, 25% of the state’s 5% admissions taxes go into a trust fund administered by the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism. This is estimated at $8.4 million annually to meet 50% of the local match requirement, officials added.
Officials said municipalities would have to come up with the other 50%.
Introduced on Jan. 14, the proposed amendment is currently in the Senate Committee on Fish, Game and Forestry. It is being sponsored by Senator Chip Campsen (R-S.C.).
