MAINTENANCE dredging will be taking place in Cork Harbour on all main shipping channels and berths next week, the Port of Cork has announced.
The dredging, a multi-million-euro operation, is set to commence on Wednesday, August 19.
It is expected that dredging will be completed by mid-October.
Every three years the Port of Cork carries out dredging work in the harbour and the quaysides to remove sediment and natural deposition on the riverbed and thus maintain the shipping channel.
Dredging is required to maintain the required depth for commercial and other vessels navigating the waters of Cork Harbour.
“All city and regional agencies and emergency services will be notified of the dredging campaign prior to commencement as required by our Dumping at Sea (DAS / Dredging) License,” the Port of Cork stated.
This DAS license is granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and their compliance team monitor the dredging and are in constant communication with the Port of Cork during the dredging campaign.
The Port company have said that “minimal disruption” is expected during the campaign.
“We appreciate your cooperation and apologise for any inconvenience while we work to keep the harbour open and provide for safe and efficient shipping,” they stated.
