The contract for the dredging work of the B. Thulhadhoo airport project has been canceled and reassigned to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) as of today.

The previous government had awarded the contract in July 2023 to Capital Marine and Construction Pvt Ltd, a private company, which commenced physical work on the project in September of the same year.

B. Thulhadhoo is among the islands selected by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration for airport development.

During his presidential campaign visit to Thulhaadhoo in August, President Mohamed Muizzu pledged to complete the airport project, which had not yet begun construction at the time.

“We will complete the airport project. We will not delay something we are committed to. If we say we will do it, we will do it,” President Muizzu said during his speech.

“Have no doubt—we will not make empty promises about what the people want. We will have the necessary technical information and a clear plan to secure financing,” he added.

The Ministry of Construction announced today that the 2023 agreement for the Thulhaadhoo Domestic Airport project has been officially canceled. The contract for land dredging and beach protection work has now been awarded to the state-owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

The project is valued at MVR 570,260,350.80 and the dredging and coastal protection work is expected to be completed within 660 days.

According to the Ministry of Construction, the Thulhaadhoo Domestic Airport will include a Code 3C runway measuring 1,800 meters in length and 30 meters in width.

As part of the newly signed agreement with MTCC, the project will involve the dredging of 55.4 hectares, alongside the construction of 2,804 meters of rock revetment and 1,677 meters of geo bag revetment for coastal protection.

The government stated that the airport is being developed to support its broader national transport policy, which aims to ensure that every inhabited island, resort, and industrial zone is located within a 30-minute travel radius of a domestic airport.
