A $15.1 million dredging project is underway in Mobile’s Langan Lake.

The long-awaited project kicked off this week with Mayor Sandy Stimpson joining city council vice president Gina Gregory and stakeholders.

“This $15.1 million RESTORE Act project wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Mobile City Council and additional funding from the ADCNR and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management,” Stimpson said.

The project is expected to last 18 months. An estimated 225,000 cubic yards of sediment will be removed from the lakebed. The removal of decades worth of sediment will improve water quality, eradicate invasive species and make the lake accessible for kayaks and canoes, Stimpson added.

Hughes Companies is the contractor on the project.
