MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will provide Alabama with $34 million for Mobile Bay.
According to a news release from U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), the extra funding will “allow additional flexibility to dispose of dredged material and increase beneficial use sites.”
The money was part of the Army Corps of Engineers Fiscal Year 2026 Work Plan, and, according to the release, the Corps uses the plan to prioritize funding for civil works projects.
Britt previously secured more than $10 million in federal funding for beneficial use of dredged‑material sites, oyster restoration, and sediment flow studies in Mobile Bay, according to her press office.
The 2024 Water Resources Development Act directs the Corps of Engineers to use at least 70% of suitable dredged material for beneficial purposes, a bipartisan measure that Britt supported.
“Mobile is home to one of the Gulf of America’s most important ports, is a key entry point to
waterways throughout the South, and has an abundance of beautiful natural resources,” said Assistant Secretary of the Army of Civil Works Adam Telle.
