Minister Announces Dredging Contract for the Port of Santos

On the 125th anniversary of the largest port in Latin America, the government announced an investment of R $ 369 million to increase Porto’s capacity

The Minister of Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation, Maurício Quintella Lessa, announced on Thursday (2), the signing of the dredging contract for deepening and adequate access to the Port of Santos. The work order for the work will be signed next week and the company responsible will be Van Oord, winner of the tender. The company will have 17 months to complete the services, divided in 6 months for presentation of the basic project and 11 for execution.

On the date chosen to commemorate Porto’s 125th anniversary, the federal government announced the investment of R $ 369 million in the project, which will allow to increase the draft of the access channels, evolution basins and berth berths of the Santos terminal.

For Quintella, the dredging works and services will be fundamental for the improvement of the Port and should generate, immediately, a positive impact on the logistic chain. “By increasing the handling capacity, we will reduce the cost of freight, increase competitiveness at the national level, bringing benefits that will certainly reach the final consumers,” he said.

The expectation is that, after the dredging works, the Port will offer more safety to the navigation, reduce the cost of freight, improve the competitiveness of the national products and reduce the Port’s expenditure with the demurrage (fine charged on delay in landing Of loads).

The Port of Santos is in first place in the ranking of the Organized Ports movement and transports a third of the products handled in the Country. It is also the first in container handling, with 3.8 million TEUs (six meters or 20 feet) in 2015; And the export of sugar and soya beans.

The cumulative cargo handling at the Port of Santos in 2016 reached the mark of 113.8 million tons, the third best of the entire series of the port for the period, only 5.1% lower than the record movement seen in 2015.

The Imports recorded a volume of 32.4 million tons, a result superior to that accumulated up to December 2015. Exports accounted for 81.4 million tons in the period. In total, there were 4,723 berths in 2016.
