Middletown News: Upper Navesink River Channel Dredging Project to Begin in December 2024.

Posted on December 2, 2024

MIDDLETOWN, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced that a significant dredging project in the Upper Navesink River Channel, in Middletown, NJ,  is set to begin in early December, aiming to restore safe navigation in the area.

The $5.2 million project, contracted to Mobile Dredging and Video Pipe Inc., will involve removing fine sand and silt from the channel in Middletown to achieve a navigable depth of four to six feet.

The dredging operations are scheduled to run through January 2025, conducted during daylight hours, seven days a week.

While the channels will remain open during the project, NJDOT advises boaters to exercise caution in the area. Key safety measures include:

  • Pipeline Awareness: Dredged material will be transported via pipeline to belt filter presses at Swimming River Park. The pipeline will be clearly marked with buoys and lights to ensure safety.
  • Construction Zones: Boaters are reminded to stay alert for pipelines, buoys, dredges, and other maritime construction equipment.
  • Communication Channels: For meeting or passing arrangements, boaters can contact the dredge on Channel 13 or Channel 72.
  • No Wake Speed: All vessels should observe no wake speeds in active work zones to avoid disruptions.

State Aids to Navigation (ATON) will be removed as necessary, and any temporary channel closures will be communicated through the Local Notice to Mariners.

NJDOT urges the public to avoid entering construction areas or approaching project-related equipment, including dredges and pipelines. Adherence to safety guidelines will help ensure the project progresses efficiently and without incident.

For questions or more information about the project, residents can contact NJDOT’s Community Relations Office: Phone: 609-963-1982 Emaildot-ccr.communityrelations@dot.nj.gov
