Mexico’s Mazatlán port authority (API Mazatlán) has canceled a tender to carry out dredging works to increase the depth of the port navigation channel, which was launched on November 29.

“The works related to the tender are being canceled while [the authority] confirms the availability of the funds approved for this project,” a note posted on government procurement site Compranet states.

“Based on the terms established by the public works and services law and its regulations, the corresponding contracting processes are not allowed to take place in 2017,” adds the note.

The initiative was set to be carried out as part of the second phase of a project to increase the channel’s depth from 12m to 15m, allowing bigger vessels to use the port.

The works are included in a larger project to expand and modernize the port, which had been on hold for a couple of years due to lack of funds. In March this year, federal authorities announced that 1.3bn pesos (US$70mn) had finally been allocated to move forward with the project.
