MEXICO BEACH, Fla. – Cleanup efforts in hard hit areas are still in full swing post Hurricane Michael. Several weeks ago, vehicles, roofs, and even houses could be found in the water ways of Mexico Beach but now it’s a different sight.
75 percent of the area was destroyed after the storm. Now four months later, Mexico Beach has come a long way. The city is 80 percent complete with clearing their water ways. The company KK Storm is doing debris removal on the canal and all of the back water ways. Once this process is complete, another company Crowder Gulf will begin a separate dredging project. Mayor Cathey said once that is finished, the city will be back in boating mode.
“We were born a fishing community, that’s how we started that’s been our mo since the city started, so if we can get our fishing back that’s just a sign of Mexico Beach returning to our roots, returning to who we are,” said Mayor Cathey. The city hopes to finish debris removal in the waterways by the middle of March and then that separate dredging project will begin by the first week of April.
