MEXICO BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – There are some exciting changes coming to Mexico Beach, including restoration efforts that will make the beach better for everyone.
Since before Hurricane Michael took a devastating toll on Mexico Beach, city officials had been seeking funding for restorations to the area. The restoration has pumped about a million cubic yards of sand to create dunes, which will protect homes and roadways from storms.
The project also lengthened the shoreline by one hundred and fifty feet.
Officials with the community development center share that they are so excited to finally see this project come to fruition.
“We are so happy to not only have it start, but have it be on its ending,” said Kimberly Shoaf, the President of Mexico Beach Community Development Council. “We just know that the fruits of our labor will be received and it’s going to be a positive thing in the long run. People are going to really enjoy it, they’re really going to appreciate it.”
The restoration will be fully complete within the month and will play a vital role in protecting infrastructure. It will also benefit the wildlife in the area.
