The Memphis District held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate a fully functioning stormwater ditch replacement project in the New Madrid, Missouri area, on Apr. 12, 2021.
A $3.4 million contract was awarded for two work areas to Tarpan Construction LLC., on Aug. 29, 2019.
“The project consisted of replacing three stormwater ditches adjacent to the landside levee toe with arch reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) and associated structures,” Project Manager Jason Dickard said. “The new RCP will route stormwater to two existing gravity flow culverts through the levee and to outlet structures and one New Madrid pump station.”
The underground drain system addresses seepage issues and instability occurring in the open ditches. The drain system carries surface water runoff away from the levee, adjacent roads, and other areas.
“Construction started Nov. 8, 2019, and had a projected completion date of November this year,” Dickard said. “However, the system is fully functional, only needing rip rap placement and turfing to consider the project done in its entirety.”
Functionally speaking, this project is now complete, more than six months ahead of schedule.
The Memphis District completed this project in partnership with the St. John’s Levee and Drainage District.
Project Delivery Team members responsible for executing this project are as follows: Project Manager Jason Dickard, Preston Snyder – Civil Design, David Thompson – Geotech, Mallory Harvey – Structural Engineer, Josh Koontz – Environmental, Don Davenport – Hydraulics & Hydrology Engineer, Bobby Porter – Realty Specialist, Kevin Keller – Cost, Nick Bidlack – Levee Safety, Chip Newman – Tech Lead/Geotech, Tommy Reyes – Geodetic Technician, Contracting – Leonard Sims, Bobby Carlisle – Civil Engineering Technician, Caruthersville Area Office, and Jeromy Carpenter – Cost Engineer.
