The McHenry City Council agreed this week to partner with the Fox Waterway Agency to complete dredging on Boone Lagoon.
The project is expected to begin in May and will include dredging of the lagoon from the Fox River to the Green Street bridge. The city is expected to pay about $160,000 for its portion of the deal, and it will store the materials at its south wastewater treatment plant until it is dried and ready for removal or reuse.
The city also discussed future cleanup options for further down the route – from Green Street to the Route 120 bridge. City staff are in the process of determining how much that project would cost.
Mayor Wayne Jett said the project would bring more boaters to the area.
“The dredging of the creek next to D.C. Cobb’s and Buddyz would increase visitors to our community while also making adjacent properties surrounding this creek more appealing to developers,” he said in a statement. “The city has tried to get this done for over 10 years. With all the Fox Waterway Agency projects, this was the only way to get it done.”
City Council members said they think the project is worthwhile.
“I believe this is fantastic that this is coming through,” 1st Ward Alderman Victor Santi said. “For this to come through and for the Fox Waterway Agency to step forward is a big positive for that area.”
Second Ward Alderman Andrew Glab said he wanted to make sure there was a comprehensive plan in place for maintenance and future dredging.
The council unanimously voted in favor of the project.
