HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has completed a $7.6 million improvement project at Maunalua Bay, including the first dredging of the entrance channel since Henry Kaiser created it in the 1960s.

The project included dredging of the entrance channel and boat ramp, improvements to the eroded shoreline, and expansion of canoe storage areas and parking.

A blessing ceremony marked the completion of the work, which finished two months ahead of schedule.

“I gotta say, this is really nice, like really, really nice, and two months ahead of schedule. In government standards, that’s like light speed,” said Ryan Kanaka’ole, acting Department of Land and Natural Resources chair.

Crews dredged 5,000 cubic yards of material from the channel.
