In coordination with the USA’s 250th Anniversary, I’m celebrating by kicking off a series of posts recognizing Maryland’s 250 years of Technology and Innovation.
So what was Maryland’s big technological breakthrough when the United States of America was in its infancy?
Dredging … MMM … The “Maryland Mud Machine” was a pioneering dredging invention from Baltimore. Baltimore becomes the first major city to take over direct payment for and management of a method to dredge mud and silt from the harbor. The Mud Machine is first employed in 1783 by brothers John and Andrew Ellicott to deepen the harbor to benefit their flour shipping business.
This invention laid the groundwork for the Ellicott Dredge Enterprises, LLC, of today. They continue to be a global leader in the underwater excavation, sediment removal, and material transport of the sludge removal industry. Fun fact, they built the dredges used for the original construction of the Panama Canal.
What’s your favorite invention created in the Old Line State?
