The National Park Service (NPS) will develop designs to restore declining marshes, an important habitat for saltmarsh sparrow. These designs will also facilitate increased resilience to extreme weather events and other impacts associated with climate change. This will ensure continued recreational opportunities in the heavily visited Fire Island National Seashore. This project will use dredged material from federal navigation channels to build the elevation of degraded marshes.

Why? After a Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment (CCVA) was conducted by the NPS, salt marshes were found to be highly vulnerable resources. This science helps guide informed decisions that protect parks, restore ecosystems, and respond to the effects of our changing climate.

What else? Ecosystem restoration and the health of our shared environment depends on strong partnerships, collaboration, and the inclusion of many experiences and perspectives. So, the NPS will utilize Indigenous knowledge in this project and employ Indigenous youth for the planning, design, and implementation of the project.
