NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Sightings of dead marine life in the North Strand have been circulating online.
Over the past week, people have been posting on Facebook about finding dead stingrays in North Myrtle Beach, with some questioning whether the ongoing Grand Strand beach renourishment project is a contributing factor.
“With the increased sand and silt in the water from the beach restoration project, I would hypothesize that this is another example of how humans impact the environment sometimes in very detrimental ways,” said Carrie Kunkle, who posted a photo of a dead stingray.
The project is projected to go along the Grand Strand, and is actively being worked on in Cherry Grove.
Protective measures are in place to protect marine life during the project, such as Turtle Exclusion Devices and screening placed in the dredge’s intake and discharge systems.
